Carcassonne is
situated in the Aude Valley plain, at the intersection
of two historically important routes, one running west
to east from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean and the
other running north to south from the Cevennes to the
Pyrenees...
Béziers is
the wine capital of the region and Canal designer Pierre-Paul
Riquet’s birthplace.
In 1209, the town was besieged by the army of Simon
de Montfort during the Albigeois Crusade. A part of the
population was massacred at this painful time.
Agde was founded by the Greeks
more than 2,500 years ago. It is known as the Black Pearl
of the Mediterranean due to its numerous basalt buildings
(dark volcanic stone).
